One Saturday in November, specifically Saturday November 14, 1992, I was going out with some guys from work. These weren't guys I worked with every day, they were in from out of town. We were meeting at what was then the Pittsburgh Sports Garden for an afternoon of drinking and college football. Before I left, I decided I was going to get stinking drunk. That I did achieve with relative ease. I didn't drive that Saturday so I got a ride home from a friend who did. When I got home I could hardly stand. I started to feel ill so I went up to the bathroom and proceeded to return all that I had eaten and drank that afternoon. As I was sitting there on the floor in the bathroom leaning against the commode, I heard a man's voice say "It's OK. You don't have to do this anymore." My response was "Huh?". Again I heard the same voice say "You don't have to do this anymore. I forgive you." Again I responded with "Huh?" Once again I heard "You don't have to do this anymore. I forgive you." Then I heard my wife's voice ask if I was all right. I asked her to come in and when she did I asked her how long she had been outside the bathroom door. She said she just came up the steps now. I asked her if she said anything else beside "Are you OK?" and she said no. Suddenly a rush of excitement came over me. The voice I heard was God's. I didn't know how to react except I had the energy of a thousand men. I apologized to my wife and children for the condition I came home in. I told my wife I needed to do something with all this energy. I was so excited. I never felt like this before. I called a couple people in our small group and told them what happened and my wife and I did go out and visit a couple people.

That night was the beginning of my new life in Christ. I had always believed in God and Jesus, but never really understood what it meant to be loved by God. This event in my life showed me that God does love us all and will come down to our level to get our attention. It also showed me His grace and mercy for all who don't turn their back on Him. I never turned my back on Him, I just never got to know Him. I learned that our Lord's love is all encompassing. All He wants is our love in return. If we love the Lord our God with all our heart and all our soul and all our mind, then we will receive the His love in return. And that is the best thing in the world. The love of God is greater than any other.

Since that day, I haven't been drunk. I hardly ever have a drink anymore. Yes I know it's OK to drink in moderation, but I haven't had the desire. The desire I have is for the Lord. Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Christian artist Stephen Curtis Chapman says life is a Great Adventure. My life of Great Adventure in Christ started Saturday November 14, 1992.
