Know what Christians Believe!
Starting January 21st
Our Preaching theme will be "Know What You Believe" from the Heidelberg Catechism. This series will cover the Apostles' Creed, Salvation and the Sacraments, the Ten Commandments and the Lord's Prayer. Week by week we will walk through the 129 Questions/Answers for the next 52 Sundays.
The Heidelberg Catechism was written in Germany's Palatine along the Rhine in 1562, by the young Zacharias Ursinus and Capar Olevianus for the Elector Frederick III. Its writing was occasioned by a scuffle at the communion table of the Holy Ghost Church of Heidelberg between its two pastors over Reformed/Luthren views of the Sacrement. It is said to offer "the intimacy of Martin Luther with the Charity of Philip Melanchthon and the fire of John Calvin."
Do anticipate each week's Heidelberg Questions/Answers in the Worship Folder. Bring your own copy of the Book of Confessions or purchase a special Heidelberg Catechism booklet with Scripture references (at the Narthex Tape desk on Sunday or in the Church Office during the week) for $5.00. You can also download the Book of Confessions from the PCUSA website (www.pcusa.org). God bless you in this great endeavor.
